"This
indigenous man literally stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn't
help but stare. His appearance alone left me so curious to know his
whole life story. The entire day I tried to imagine his daily life
and I kept contemplating the reason he would be sitting alongside
the bustling street by himself and how he was wearing nice dress
clothes while he himself was filthy and relaxing in the dirt."

fishing boats in the harbor of the coastal town of Elmina were a
real emphasis of just how distant our two worlds are."

"This Ribbon
that flows from the side of the Colosseum was in this place for
literally only a couple hours. It was placed to celebrate the
National Holiday of Italy (their Independence day). A large parade
commenced around the Colosseum where all traffic stopped for an
entire morning. In this parade they marched every branch of their
military through the streets of Rome. And then as quickly as the
Ribbon went up, it was down....as if it was never there at all. This
picture truly captures a moment that I will never see again."

"Citizens of
the world must neither forget nor deny the cruelty that took place
in Birkenau and other concentration camps. Standing where this photo
was taken removes breath from the lungs to see the utter destruction
of human life, and leaves no words to be spoken among the ghostly
silence."

"Burning Santiago Riots...The
manifestations on the day Pinochet died, Dec. 10, 2006, were an
unforgettable experience, and fun to be a part of until they turned
into violent riots. This smoke is from tires that were
set fire near La Moneda, the presidential palace that Allende died
in during Pinochet's coup. Note the time on the clock tower, 8:30
pm, approx. 6 hours after his death, and the time frame established
by the hanging poster."
